This is a who-done-it written in the first person from the perspective of Lella, a post-menopausal Southern California woman who's cat stows away in the back seat of her boyfriend Larry's Mercedes and winds up in Phoenix. Lella makes what was planned to be a quick trip over to pick up her pet, and winds up slap in the middle of the re-investigation of a twenty year old murder. She and the cat and a stray ferret spend a week or so trying to stay cool and hydrated in mid-summer Phoenix while each does their part in solving the crime.
A cute tale, definitely an interesting story and a well documented journey through Phoenix. Mind candy fills a necessary niche at my house.
This fascinating mystery unfolds through the eyes and thoughts of our female star, Lella. Her boyfriend is Larry, a retired detective that can't let go of a seventeen year old murder case. Supposedly, the murderer is in prison but he is not so sure. When a group of people claim new evidence, he travels from California to Phoenix to take a closer look. Lella's cat secretly hitches a ride in Larry's car. When the stowaway is discovered, Lella receives a call to come get her cat. Thanks to the runaway cat and a sneaky ferret, Lella is drawn into the investigation of the reopened case and finds herself dealing with past fears and a burning desire to fit together the pieces to the murder mystery. As clues are solved and secrets are revealed, the reader will be caught up in the story as it unravels. It is a good detective storyline that engages the reader's curiosity but fails to stir the emotions. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Three stars.
After reading DESERT MOON, I would highly recommend reading the first 2 books of this series, first. Although it's a passable stand-alone, it's much better reading the books in order.
Lella's cat, Flash, is a stowaway in Larry Devin's car as he drives from California to Arizona where he is involved in a retrial of a man sent to prison 17 years previously. Being as Larry is Lella's boyfriend and Flash is 'her' cat, she has no choice but to make the drive herself to retrieve the runaway cat.
Larry talks her into staying for a few days, in which they become embroiled in the Russian mafia, strange flight attendants and a new friend for Flash ... Lucy, the ferret.
If it weren't for Flash and Lucy and their antics, this would have been a boring read. The animals kept me chuckling and entertained.
I enjoyed the tour of Phoenix and surrounding areas like Carefree. I live a few miles outside Phoenix and it's always fun to see familiar names and places.. especially seeing them through the eyes of a character who has never been there.
I dislike repetitiveness in my reading material. Larry incessantly is touching, rubbing, squeezing Lella's knee. It's not just once or twice ... it's on almost every page. Once or twice would have been more than enough for me. Maybe Larry is fixated on her knee ..if so, that should be explained with the first touch. If not, the author should find a new and different way for her character to act.
That being said, it wasn't a bad book, but it could have been much, much better.
